About the Team The Safety Systems team is at the forefront of OpenAI's mission to build and deploy safe AGI, driving our commitment to AI safety and fostering a culture of trust and transparency. The Model Policy team aligns model behavior with desired human values and norms. We co-design policy with models and for models by driving rapid policy taxonomy iteration based on data and defining evaluation criteria for foundational models’ ability to reason about safety. Key focus areas include: catastrophic risk, mental health, teen safety and multimodal safety. About the Role Providing access to frontier AI systems raises complex questions around dual-use science and catastrophic risk. How should models respond to requests involving chemical synthesis, biological experimentation, or pathogen research? Where is the boundary between legitimate scientific inquiry and information that could enable misuse? How do we design policies that meaningfully reduce risk without unnecessarily restricting beneficial research? This is a senior role in which you’ll help shape policy creation and development at OpenAI for addressing biological and chemical risks. You will develop structured policy frameworks and taxonomies to guide safe model behavior. This role sits at the intersection of biosecurity expertise, AI safety research, and policy design. You will help ensure that frontier AI systems can support beneficial life sciences research, such as drug discovery, public health, and biosafety, while reducing the risk that these capabilities could be misused. This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees. In this role, you’ll: Design and maintain model policies governing chemical and biological risk, defining how models should safely handle dual-use scenarios. Develop structured taxonomies of chemical and biological risk that inform model training data, evaluation benchmarks, and safety monitoring systems. Translate biosecurity and chemical security expertise into actionable model behavior, working closely with research and engineering teams to operationalize policy in training and evaluation pipelines. Develop a broad range of subject matter expertise while maintaining agility across topics. Identify emerging risk vectors where frontier AI capabilities could meaningfully lower barriers to harmful activity and develop mitigation strategies. Engage with internal and external subject-matter experts in biosecurity, biodefense, and chemical safety to ensure policies reflect real-world risk landscapes. You might thrive in this role if you: Have strong domain expertise in chemistry, biology, biosecurity, or related fields and are motivated to translate that expertise into principled, operational policies that scale to Frontier AI systems. Have experience researching LLMs, ML, AI, tech policy, moral reasoning, and/or enjoy classification problems. Have extensive experience defining, refining and enforcing policies for ML models across training, evaluation, and deployment. Are comfortable navigating ambiguous, high-stakes problem spaces, balancing risk reduction with the benefits of scientific openness and innovation. Can reason about the benefits and risks of open-ended problem spaces, generate novel approaches under ambiguity, and take full ownership of end-to-end solutions from concept through execution. Have experience working at the intersection of science, policy, or emerging technology, such as in life sciences research, national security, risk analysis, technology policy, or AI safety. About the Team The DeployCo Deal Desk helps turn customer deployment opportunities into clear, executable professional-services engagements. We partner across Deployment, Sales, Legal, Finance, Technical Revenue, and Operations to ensure every deal has a well-defined scope, pricing aligned to approved guardrails, complete approvals, and a clean handoff to delivery. The team sits at the intersection of commercial execution and delivery readiness. We make complex services deals easier to buy—and easier to deliver—while strengthening the templates and workflows that help DeployCo scale. About the Role We are hiring a hands-on Professional Services Commercial Lead to own the end-to-end deal desk workflow for assigned DeployCo professional-services engagements. You will personally draft and revise statements of work (SOWs), validate pricing and deal inputs, coordinate cross-functional reviews and approvals, and ensure commitments are clear, deliverable, and ready to execute. The differentiator in this role is drafting expertise: you have written SOWs, not simply routed them. You can turn technical and delivery inputs into precise scope, deliverables, milestones, assumptions, dependencies, acceptance criteria, fees, and change controls—then keep the deal moving. This is an individual-contributor role for an experienced contract manager, deal desk professional, or professional-services commercial operator who combines strong writing and commercial judgment with disciplined execution. What You’ll Do Own assigned DeployCo deals from intake through approval, signature, and operational handoff. Draft and revise SOWs, work orders, and change orders using approved templates and playbooks; partner with Legal on non-standard contractual terms and redlines. Validate rate cards, fees, hours and resourcing inputs, discounts, margin inputs, billing milestones, and key deal data against approved inputs and guardrails; reconcile the SOW to the quote and route exceptions with a clear recommendation. Coordinate reviews and approvals across Deployment, Sales, Legal, Finance, Technical Revenue, Billing, and Order Management; surface gaps early and keep stakeholders aligned on next steps. Identify and coordinate resolution of delivery and commercial risks, including unclear scope or acceptance criteria, infeasible commitments, scope creep, inconsistent documents, and downstream billing or revenue implications. Maintain accurate deal records, approval evidence, and status updates; meet internal turnaround commitments and ensure a clean post-signature handoff. Turn recurring issues into stronger templates, playbooks, approval paths, and workflow improvements that increase deal quality and speed. What You Bring Typically 7+ years of relevant B2B experience across deal desk, commercial contracts or contract management, professional-services operations, sales operations, order management, or a similar function. 3+ years of substantial, hands-on experience drafting and revising customer-facing SOWs for professional-services engagements. Experience operating pricing-validation, commercial intake, approval, and routing workflows alongside contract drafting and review. The ability to translate technical or service requirements into contract-ready scope, deliverables, milestones, dependencies, acceptance criteria, and change controls. Sound judgment and independent ownership of complex or non-standard deals, including the ability to recommend a practical path forward and escalate the highest-risk issues. Working knowledge of quote-to-cash and how SOW structure and pricing affect delivery, billing, revenue recognition, and the customer experience. Clear, concise communication; excellent attention to detail; and the ability to manage multiple time-sensitive deals while influencing partners without formal authority. Preferred Qualifications Experience as a contract manager supporting customer-facing professional services, consulting, implementation, or managed services. Experience in cloud, enterprise SaaS, AI, or another complex technology environment. Familiarity with fixed-fee, milestone-based, and time-and-materials services engagements. Experience with Salesforce or CPQ, contract-lifecycle-management tools, e-signature platforms, and approval workflow systems. A track record of improving SOW templates, commercial playbooks, or deal workflows. About the Team OpenAI Finance is responsible for ensuring the organization is set up for success in pursuit of its mission. The Technical Accounting, Accounting Policy, and Financial Reporting organization partners across Finance to assess complex corporate matters and develop well-supported U.S. GAAP conclusions. The team supports non-routine business activities requiring thoughtful technical judgment, scalable accounting policies, financial statement disclosures, processes, and controls. About the Role You will serve as a senior technical accounting leader and strategic advisor to Finance and business leadership. You will oversee a broad portfolio of complex accounting matters and strategic transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, major commercial arrangements, financing transactions, investments and financial instruments, leases, intercompany transactions and consolidation, impairment, and other matters requiring significant professional judgment and practical implementation. You will advise and influence stakeholders across Corporate Accounting, Financial Reporting, Treasury, Legal, Tax, Strategic Finance, FP&A, Equity, Internal Controls, valuation specialists, and external auditors. You will drive timely resolution of complex accounting questions, align leaders on material judgments and risks, and ensure conclusions are translated into audit-ready memoranda, close entries, financial statement disclosures, and durable controls. You will also help strengthen external-reporting processes, as applicable. This is a highly visible role for an experienced accounting leader who can independently set direction for complex workstreams, advise senior decision-makers, anticipate and escalate material judgments, align cross-functional stakeholders, and carry issues from authoritative research through clear recommendations and disciplined implementation. Location and work model: This role is based in San Francisco and follows a 3 day hybrid work model. In this role, you will: Lead the resolution of complex technical corporate accounting matters across the monthly and quarterly close; shape financial statement presentation and footnote disclosures; and ensure technical conclusions are reflected in journal entries, reconciliations, clear ownership, and effective controls. Own the technical accounting for complex financing, investment, and equity-related arrangements, including classification, measurement, presentation, and disclosure. Lead the assessment of consequential corporate accounting matters, including leases, commitments, contingencies, guarantees, accruals, prepaid expenses, property and equipment, internal-use software, capitalization, and vendor or partnership arrangements, as applicable. Serve as a senior accounting advisor on strategic investments, acquisitions, joint ventures, and partnerships; lead the application of business-combination, equity-method, variable-interest-entity, consolidation, noncontrolling-interest, and purchase-accounting guidance as the facts require. Lead assessments of potential impairment indicators and asset recoverability, as applicable, across goodwill and indefinite-lived intangibles, finite-lived intangibles and long-lived asset groups or assets held for sale, equity-method and nonmarketable equity investments, and eligible debt securities or receivables; oversee reporting-unit or asset-group identification, qualitative and quantitative testing, cash-flow forecasts, fair-value and expected-credit-loss estimates, sensitivities, evidence-backed memoranda, controls, disclosures, and auditor review in partnership with valuation specialists. Lead the evaluation of stock-based compensation, equity awards, earnings-per-share implications, and the interplay among capital structure, valuation, dilution, ownership economics, and financial statement presentation. Lead the accounting assessment of complex treasury and operating matters, including cash, liquidity, foreign currency, intercompany balances, related-party arrangements, and infrastructure or vendor commitments; coordinate with Tax on downstream impacts without owning tax conclusions. Lead the development of concise, evidence-backed technical accounting memoranda and position papers; set and defend accounting positions grounded in authoritative guidance, materiality, key judgments, and economic substance; and drive timely alignment and resolution with external auditors. Own the end-to-end translation of defensible accounting conclusions into journal entries, close procedures, footnote disclosures, data requirements, clear ownership, and repeatable control activities; drive coordinated implementation across Finance. Anticipate emerging accounting standards, shape accounting policy and change-management efforts, and translate new guidance into practical implementation strategies, financial statement disclosures, reporting calendars, and scalable reporting processes. Provide senior review of financial metrics and external-facing analyses, ensuring consistent definitions, clear labeling, appropriate reconciliations, controlled source data, and alignment with Legal guidance. Partner with Financial Reporting and Internal Controls leaders to strengthen disclosure controls, SOX/ICFR readiness, impairment-trigger monitoring, annual and interim assessment controls, audit trails, valuation and financial statement tie-outs, and subsequent-event assessments. Lead high-priority, cross-functional strategic transactions spanning accounting-policy implementation, operating-model changes, legal-entity matters, systems or process improvements, and other non-routine corporate initiatives. Design and institutionalize pragmatic accounting policies, playbooks, decision frameworks, and automation that improve consistency, strengthen organizational capability, preserve independent judgment, faithfully represent economic substance, and escalate unresolved issues promptly. You might thrive in this role if you: Hold a CPA, CA, or equivalent accounting qualification, or bring comparable demonstrated technical-accounting expertise. Bring 10+ years of progressive experience in technical accounting, accounting advisory, public accounting, corporate controllership, or complex financial reporting, with meaningful industry or transaction experience and a record of leading high-stakes accounting matters. Demonstrate broad U.S. GAAP expertise across corporate accounting, leases, financial instruments, capitalized costs, share-based compensation, consolidation, impairment, and financial statement presentation, with the judgment to apply the appropriate guidance to each matter. Apply relevant guidance across ASC 205, 230, 250, and 260; ASC 320, 321, 323, and 326; ASC 350, including ASC 350-40, and ASC 360; and ASC 450, 460, 470, 480, 718, 805, 810, 815, 820, 830, 842, and 850 as the facts and assigned portfolio require. Have led and defended significant accounting positions, developed or reviewed audit-ready technical memoranda, evaluated competing accounting views, worked constructively with external auditors, and grounded conclusions in evidence, economic substance, and authoritative guidance. Have led significant aspects of corporate close and reporting, acquisitions or investments, complex ownership structures, consolidation, and impairment or credit-loss assessments; understand how technical decisions affect forecasts, valuations, journal entries, reconciliations, disclosures, and controls. Understand how accounting policies and technical judgments flow into entity-level close, financial statements, footnote disclosures, account reconciliations, significant estimates, treasury activity, and external-reporting readiness, where applicable. Influence and advise leaders across Legal, Treasury, Tax, Corporate Accounting, Financial Reporting, FP&A, valuation, and the business while maintaining independent technical judgment and constructive challenge. Communicate complex accounting judgments and their strategic implications clearly to senior leaders and both technical and nontechnical audiences, including practical alternatives, evidence gaps, unresolved risks, and recommended decisions.
